ACCU-BURR™ Burnisher

ACCU-BURR™ Burnisher

from $39.99

Never Struggle to turn a burr on a card scraper again. The ACCU-BURR™ makes turning a burr, easy, simple and repeatable.

One burnisher, any scraper. If you've ever struggled to turn a hook (or burr) on a scraper, or simply thought there might be a better way, Blackburn Tools and Union Manufacturing Company have made this tool for you. Meticulously designed in every detail to be the most versatile burnisher ever, the Accu-Burr® is the first and only burnisher you'll need on your bench.

For centuries, the common burnisher has remained largely unchanged. A simple rod of hardened steel held in a handle, their use depended largely on the user's freehand skills. Some mounted that rod in a more sophisticated holder to guide the process, but these, too, had distinct disadvantages.

The heart of the Accu-Burr® burnisher is a solid carbide rod with three v-shaped grooves around the middle of the rod.

These grooves are precision ground to turn a fine, medium, or coarse (5°, 10°, or 15°, respectively) burr simultaneously on both sides of any prepared scraper edge.

Because quality and precision matter greatly for the function of this tool, we use a premium American-made grade of carbide, sourced from and ground by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading carbide tooling manufacturer.

Advantages of the Accu-Burr® burnisher include:

  • Forming a precise and repeatable burr simultaneously on both edges of a scraper.

  • No deflection on thin card scrapers, or profiled and curved scrapers of all shapes that are necessarily held high above the vise.

  • Working on any hardness of scraper (we've tested this successfully on HSS steel blades at approximately Rc 65).

Accu-Burr models

  • AB1: A 3/16" diameter rod, 3" long. With no handles, this is the base model. It works on scrapers from 0.010" to 0.100" thick, and on concave curved edges as small as 3/32" radius. Use the burnisher as it comes, or add your own handles.

  • Jr1: Made with the AB1 rod, this model has two brass handles and the same performance specs as the AB1 rod. Approximately 5 1/4" long.

  • Sr1: Made with the AB1 rod, this model has one wood handle and the same performance specs as the AB1 rod. With only one handle, you can consolidate the edge or draw back an old burr before turning it over again. Approximately 6" long.

  • Sr2: Made with the AB1 rod, this model has two wood handles and the same performance specs as the AB1 rod. Approximately 8 3/4" long.

  • AB2: A 1/4" diameter rod, 4" long. With wider grooves, this is the model to use on thick scraper plane blades. It works on scrapers from 0.010" to 0.156" (5/32") thick, and on concave curved edges as small as 1/8" radius. Use the burnisher as it comes, or add your own handles.

Which model is best for me?

If you like to consolidate the face of your card scraper before forming the burr, choose our single-handled Sr1 model. If you're looking for a compact tool that slips into your pocket, or want to make your own handles, consider just the AB1 or AB2 rod (they're both favorites around our shop). Or, if you prefer symmetry and the guidance that two handles gives, go for the double-handled Jr1 or Sr2 model. For putting a burr on thick scraper plane blades, you'll need the wider grooves of the AB2. There's no way to go wrong with the Accu-Burr® - the grooves just work.

How to use:

No burnisher gives better results with less effort. To turn a burr, hold your Accu-Burr® carbide burnisher perpendicular to the prepared scraper edge and centered on either the fine, medium, or coarse groove (the deepest groove is for the coarse burr). Using a moderate downward force on the burnisher, draw it firmly and smoothly along the length of the prepared scraper edge (a drop of oil on the burnisher will make this action even smoother). This burnishing will raise a burr that can be barely felt with your finger; if no burr is felt, repeat as needed, but with increasing force, until a nearly imperceptible burr is formed along the entire length of the scraper.

Your Accu-Burr® can also be used as a conventional burnisher by drawing the ungrooved portion of the rod along the scraper's edge.
